Hungary bans wild animals in circuses starting 2027

Hungary has officially banned the use of wild animals in circus performances, effective January 1, 2027. The new legislation, introduced via government decree, prohibits the use, purchase, ownership, breeding, and training of 25 specific animal groups, including elephants, tigers, primates, bears, and large felines. The ban also extends to hybrids up to the fourth generation, though domestic animals like dogs, cats, and horses are excluded.

To ensure animal welfare during the transition, the law allows animals currently held legally to remain in their existing locations for the remainder of their lives. However, they may no longer be used for shows, training, or breeding. The regulations also apply to foreign circus troupes, who will be prohibited from entering the country if their performances involve wild animals. This move makes Hungary the final European Union member state to implement such restrictions on animal use in circuses.
