Hungary boosts school start aid with charity drive and government grants

The Magyar Máltai Szeretetszolgálat is running a donation campaign in INTERSPAR supermarkets from 13‑16 August 2026. Shoppers can add an “Adni Öröm!” donation card (values from 500 to 10 000 HUF) to their basket; proceeds will purchase new school supplies for children from low‑income families. The charity will collect the cards in all INTERSPAR stores across the country and distribute the items promptly.

Separately, the Hungarian government is providing a one‑time school‑start allowance of up to 100 000 HUF per child, paid in two installments (first 50 000 HUF by 24 August 2026, second 50 000 HUF by 30 November 2026). Eligibility requires that the child belong to a designated disadvantaged group, that the family meet income criteria, and that the child be enrolled for the upcoming school year. The support is tax‑free and exempt from garnishment.
