Hungary car market posts 13% rise in new registrations, electric sales surge

In the first half of 2026 Hungary registered 74,905 new passenger cars, a 13.3% increase over the same period last year. Electric vehicle registrations climbed 43.7% to 7,498 units, while plug‑in hybrid sales doubled to 5,653 units. Small commercial vehicle registrations slipped slightly, falling 0.1% to 11,792.

Overall vehicle registrations reached 86,697, but 18.7% (16,199) were re‑exports, leaving a net total of 70,498 new cars kept domestically. Toyota remained the market leader, boosting its sales by 16.1% and holding a 12.9% market share. SUVs accounted for nearly half of all sales, and the brand’s models such as the Corolla, Yaris and Aygo X performed strongly across multiple segments.
