Hungary: Chimney inspections urged before heating season
Homeowners in Hungary are advised to schedule chimney inspections before the heating season begins to avoid safety risks and potential fines. While chimney sweeping services are automatic for apartment buildings, residents of single-family homes must proactively request the service through the National Directorate General for Disaster Management website or via telephone.
Inspection requirements depend on the heating method: solid fuel systems require an annual check, while gas-powered systems require one every two years. A full technical inspection is recommended every four years. Failure to address undetected faults that necessitate fire department intervention could result in fines of up to 3 million HUF.
Authorities recommend scheduling inspections during milder weather to avoid the long waiting times and complex repairs that often occur once cold weather sets in. For properties registered as the headquarters or site of a business, including sole proprietorships, inspections must be arranged through private chimney sweeping companies at their own expense.
