Hungary commemorates 70th anniversary of 1956 Revolution

Hungary is preparing for a series of commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution. In Eger, a symbolic holey Hungarian flag has been displayed on the facade of the City Hall to honor the historical event.

Mayor Ákos Vágner announced a jubilee week of programming scheduled from October 19 to 23. The program, organized in collaboration with municipal, city, and university cultural institutions, includes historical lectures, musical and art events, film screenings, and public programs. Specific initiatives aim to engage younger generations through poetry competitions, drawing contests, and poster exhibitions.

Additionally, the 56/70 film festival will commemorate the revolution at the Corvin Cinema from October 16 to 18. The event features speakers including Péter Gárdos and Katalin Jánosi, the granddaughter of Imre Nagy, who shared personal reflections on her grandfather’s legacy and his role during the period of political marginalization.
