Hungary considers average speed enforcement on highways
The Hungarian government is working on implementing a sectional average speed measurement system on motorways to combat excessive speeding and recidivist traffic violations. According to Minister Dávid Vitézy, current technology allows for monitoring the time taken to travel between checkpoints, which would prevent drivers from simply slowing down only when approaching traditional speed cameras.
A recent test on the M6 motorway between Érd and Himesháza, involving over 8,000 vehicles, recorded average speeds as high as 214 km/h in certain sections. While the technology is available, current legislation does not yet permit sanctions based on average speed measurements. The Minister emphasized that the primary goal is not to increase fine revenue, but to ensure road safety and discourage behavior that endangers other motorists.
