Hungary targets euro adoption as early as 2032
Hungary is working toward adopting the euro, with potential timelines emerging between 2032 and 2033. Analysts and central bank officials suggest that if the country successfully joins the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) by 2030, the earliest possible adoption date could be January 1, 2032, or 2033.
To meet the Maastricht convergence criteria, Hungary must address significant fiscal challenges. While the country has shown progress in price stability due to favorable inflation trends and declining country risk premiums, the budget remains under pressure. A high budget deficit of 7.5 percent of GDP is expected this year, which could push public debt to 77.5 percent of GDP.
Key requirements for joining the eurozone include consistent economic and monetary policies and a credible fiscal plan. The Hungarian central bank has lowered its inflation target to 2.5 percent, effective in 2028. Experts note that the credibility of the 2027 budget and the government's ability to implement spending cuts and revenue reforms will be decisive factors in meeting these requirements.
