Hungary presents 2027 budget plan focused on deficit reduction and social spending

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has unveiled the 2027 budget proposal, outlining a strategy to reduce the budget deficit from an estimated 7.5% of GDP in 2026 to 4.9% in 2027, with a long-term goal of reaching 2.8% by 2030. The plan emphasizes social support and public sector wage increases.

Key provisions include a 677 billion forint allocation for public sector wage increases, affecting approximately 603,000 employees. Specifically, healthcare workers could see an average increase of 15-17%, while social sector workers may receive 17.8%. The budget also allocates 510 billion forints for healthcare development, including new ambulances and diagnostic equipment.

Social measures include doubling the child allowance and increasing minimum pensions. To support lower-income earners, the government plans to reduce personal income tax for those earning up to 680,000 forints monthly. Additionally, an energy modernization program aims to help 120,000 families reduce energy costs by 2030 through subsidies for insulation and window replacements.

To fund these measures and manage the deficit, the government intends to introduce a wealth tax, increase taxes for large corporations with revenues exceeding 180 billion forints, and implement cost-saving measures. Finance Minister András Kármán noted that the 2027 budget is a foundational step toward potential Eurozone accession by 2032.
