A diplomatic dispute has emerged between Hungary and Ukraine regarding the Carpathian Eight (C8), a regional cooperation initiative launched by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The C8 aims to enhance security, energy, and logistics through economic cooperation among eight countries in the Carpathian region.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has officially rejected membership in the C8, stating that Hungary was listed as a participant without prior consultation or consent. Magyar described the inclusion of a sovereign nation in such an international framework without its agreement as “completely unacceptable.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded by accusing the Hungarian government of continuing the isolationist and obstructionist policies of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Sybiha expressed confusion over Hungary's rejection and criticized statements that cast doubt on pragmatic cooperation between Ukrainian and Hungarian energy companies, which had previously been addressed in a bilateral memorandum.

While the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a representative attended the initial summit in western Ukraine, it emphasized that Budapest did not sign the group's closing declaration. The tension highlights ongoing friction regarding regional integration and energy sovereignty in Eastern Europe.
