Hungary demographic data shows declining births and rising marriages

According to preliminary data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), July 2026 saw a decrease in births and an increase in marriages compared to the previous year. There were 6,197 live births, an 8.2 percent decrease from July 2025, while deaths fell by 2.9 percent to 8,896.

Marriage rates rose by 3.6 percent, with 4,480 marriages performed. For the period of January to July 2026, total births reached 40,528, representing a 3.0 percent decline compared to the same period in 2025. The total fertility rate is estimated at 1.28 per woman, down from 1.30 the previous year.
