Hungary NKA subsidy scandal leads to new arrests and detentions

Authorities in Hungary have expanded their investigation into the National Cultural Fund (NKA) subsidy scandal, resulting in new arrests and detention orders. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has detained two individuals, including Mária Gurzó Fásy, the wife of artist Ádám Fásy, in connection with alleged budgetary fraud and the use of fictitious documents.

The investigation centers on a documentary film project titled ‘Hand, Heart, Soul – In the Footsteps of Hungarian Contemporary Artists,’ produced by Munkácsy Art Kft. The company received over 80 million forints in state funding, but investigators allege that the film had not been completed by the time the funds were accounted for in April. Instead, it is suspected that fictitious invoices were used to mask the lack of progress.

More than 56 million forints of the project's budget were reportedly channeled to companies linked to the family of Ádám Fásy. This case is part of a much larger probe into the NKA, which is examining the potential misuse of over 17 billion forints in state cultural subsidies. To date, several individuals have been detained or placed under judicial supervision as the investigation continues.
