Hungary economy grows 1.7% in Q2 2026 amid industrial recovery

The Hungarian economy showed growth in the second quarter of 2026, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of expansion and signaling an end to a period of stagnation. According to revised data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the GDP grew by 1.7% year-on-year and 0.5% on a quarterly basis.

Growth was primarily driven by the services sector and household consumption. The industrial sector also showed signs of recovery, with value added increasing by 3.7% compared to the previous year, led by the manufacturing of electronic and optical products. However, the construction sector and agriculture faced challenges; agriculture saw a significant decline of 12.4% due to severe drought conditions.

An analysis by MBH Bank regarding the Paks Nuclear Power Plant's temporary output reduction in August noted that the impact on GDP was approximately 0.1%. The reduction, caused by low Danube water levels, resulted in increased electricity import costs estimated at around 50 billion forints. Despite these specific sectoral pressures and a decline in investments, analysts maintain a positive outlook for long-term growth.
