Hungary heatwave intensifies across Central Europe

A severe heatwave is sweeping Hungary and neighboring Central European regions. Forecasts for the Hungarian town of Dunaszerdahely predict maximum temperatures of 38‑39 °C later this week, with earlier peaks of 36 °C on Friday and 37‑39 °C on Saturday and Sunday. The Hungarian Met Office has issued first‑degree heat alerts for six counties – Pest, Bács‑Kiskun, Csongrád‑Csanád, Fejér, Győr‑Moson‑Sopron and Komárom‑Esztergom – warning of “dangerous heat” that can strain the body and increase fire risk. Similar warnings are in force in parts of Slovakia, where the Slovak Hydrometeorological Service expects daytime highs of 34‑35 °C early in the week, climbing to 36‑39 °C later. Thunderstorms with strong gusts are also forecast, especially on Tuesday. Health authorities advise regular fluid intake, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest hours, using shade, hats and sunscreen, and keeping indoor temperatures moderate. Tips for air‑conditioner use – setting temperatures 6‑8 °F below outdoor levels, avoiding direct drafts and maintaining filters – are recommended, alongside low‑tech cooling methods such as damp bedding and ventilation.
