Hungary energy grid stability concerns drive focus on industrial load shedding
Hungarian industrial consumers face increasing energy market risks, shifting the focus from price to supply security and operational predictability. Under government regulation 118/2026. (VIII. 1.), MAVIR has the authority to mandate load shedding for users with a connected capacity of at least 500 kW during significant network disturbances or energy crises. Failure to comply with these reductions can result in financial penalties calculated at 200 percent of the average HUPX next-day quarter-hourly price, or even temporary disconnection from the public grid.
To address these challenges, industry experts emphasize the need for technological shifts. Zsolt Veres, Country Director for Schneider Electric Hungary, noted at a Budapest conference that the electrification of buildings, transport, and data centers is transforming electricity demand. He highlighted that energy intelligence and artificial intelligence can help manage these complexities by predicting changes and coordinating production with consumption. Modernizing the grid to handle variable loads from renewables and energy storage is considered essential for future-proofing the energy transition.
