Hungary EV charging providers limit power during heatwaves
Electric vehicle charging providers in Hungary are implementing strict power limitations to manage extreme pressure on the national energy grid during heatwaves. The situation is exacerbated by low water levels in the Danube, which have forced a major nuclear power plant to operate at only 10% capacity.
To mitigate peak demand between 17:00 and 22:00—when air conditioning use reaches historical highs—several companies have announced restrictions:
• MOL has reduced the output of its MOL Plugee ultra-fast chargers from 150 kW to 100 kW during evening hours. • E.ON Drive Infrastructure Hungary is cutting available power by 50% at locations with high-performance chargers (at least 300 kW) to release up to 10 megawatts for the grid. • Shell Recharge has capped charger output at 150 kW between 16:00 and 22:00. • Tesco-based Shell Recharge stations have been temporarily shut down entirely.
