Hungary expands pumpkin cultivation area
Pumpkin cultivation in Hungary is experiencing significant growth. According to a professional summary from the National Agricultural Chamber (NAK), the area dedicated to pumpkin farming is projected to reach 1,890 hectares by 2026.
This represents an expansion of approximately 30 percent, or 420 hectares, between 2022 and 2026. Domestic production continues to play a decisive role in meeting local demand.
The market features a variety of types, including the popular Canadian butternut pumpkin, the deep orange nutmeg pumpkin, and the Hokkaido pumpkin, which is notable for having edible skin. Traditional domestic varieties, such as the Nagydobos pumpkin known for its silvery-grey skin and chestnut-like flavor, also remain key components of the local supply.
