Hungary expels ten Russian diplomats amid foreign policy shift

Hungary has undergone a significant shift in its foreign policy following the transition to a new government led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar. Moving away from the close ties maintained under former leader Viktor Orbán, the current administration has officially designated Russia as a threat to Hungarian national security.

In a major diplomatic escalation, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expelled ten Russian diplomats, citing violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Such actions are typically taken when diplomats are suspected of engaging in intelligence activities. Foreign Minister Anita Orbán stated the decision was necessary to protect Hungary's sovereignty and security.

Russia has responded with threats of a “painful response,” including potential disruptions to gas supplies. While Hungary has historically relied on Russian oil and gas to maintain low fuel prices, the new government has expressed a willingness to explore alternative energy partnerships, including discussions with Latvia regarding Baltic energy supplies.
