Hungary braces for record heat as temperatures near 40 °C

Meteorological services in Hungary have issued warnings that an intense heatwave will hit the country in the coming days, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 35‑40 °C in many regions. Forecasts from Időkép and HungaroMet indicate that by early August Hungary could become the hottest spot in Central Europe, with a high probability of temperatures surpassing 40 °C in locations such as Szeged. The heatwave follows a recent cold snap that set a new July‑night low of 4.6 °C in Lénárddaróc, the coldest morning in the country in four decades. Analyses show a long‑term trend of increasing numbers of days exceeding 27 °C, with 125 years of data revealing a rise of more than three such days per year. Similar extreme temperatures are forecast for nearby Austria, where Vienna may also see highs close to 40 °C. Authorities advise the public, especially the elderly and those with cardiovascular conditions, to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and follow health‑protective measures during the upcoming heat spell.
