Hungary faces record drought and heat impacting crop yields
Extreme heat and severe drought in the summer of 2026 have significantly impacted Hungarian agriculture. According to HungaroMet, the season was the driest and second hottest in the country since 1901. Between June and August, precipitation totaled only 74.1 millimeters, representing just 36 percent of the typical summer amount. A record temperature of 42 degrees Celsius was recorded in Szécsény on June 30.
By late August, severe agricultural drought affected half of Hungary's territory. This environmental stress has led to varied consequences across different crops. In the Tokaj wine region, grape yields were up to 30 percent lower than expected. Pumpkin production also saw smaller yields and smaller fruit sizes due to the heat and lack of moisture, though producers noted the heat resulted in sweeter flavors.
Market conditions for other produce are also shifting. While tomato prices remain high in some regions like Sicily, supply fluctuations in Europe and rising production costs are creating challenges for growers. The combination of low humidity, high temperatures, and insufficient soil moisture from previous seasons continues to threaten agricultural stability.
