Péter Magyar reports budget surplus amid Hungarian political shifts

Following the transition of power in Hungary, Prime Minister Péter Magyar of the Tisza Party has reported significant fiscal changes. Magyar announced that the July budget closed with a surplus exceeding 500 billion forints, claiming a reduction in the deficit from 91% to 67% through measures intended to eliminate waste and corruption.

However, political analysts have contested this narrative. Critics suggest the improved figures may result from the suspension of government expenditures and a favorable interest rate environment rather than structural improvements. Some analysts warn that aggressive fiscal tightening could hinder economic growth, noting that GDP growth in the second quarter was lower than expected at 0.4%.

In political developments, the Tisza Party has formally nominated András Baka for the presidency, supported by 140 parliamentary representatives. This follows the departure of former President Tamás Sulyok.

Separately, Minister László Gajdos announced a 51 billion forint development program aimed at modernizing Hungary's aging water infrastructure. The initiative seeks to reduce massive daily water losses by supporting municipalities and utility providers in implementing automated monitoring and pressure management technologies, with a focus on disadvantaged regions.
