Hungary faces demographic aging and rising unemployment

Recent data from Eurostat and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office highlight growing demographic and economic challenges in Hungary. Regional statistics indicate an aging population and a widening development gap between Budapest and rural areas. Projections for 2025 show a continuing trend of an increasing proportion of elderly citizens across various counties.

Simultaneously, unemployment in Hungary is showing signs of an upward trend. The three-month unemployment rate reached 4.8 percent between June and August 2024, with experts warning it could exceed 5 percent in the coming months. This rise is partly attributed to shifts in the manufacturing sector, particularly within the automotive supply chain.

Several major industrial players are adjusting their workforce, including Audi Hungaria and the Volkswagen Group, which saw a reduction of 500 employees in 2025. Other companies, such as Thyssenkrupp and ZF, are also undergoing restructuring or staff reductions in their Hungarian operations. While these changes are not characterized as mass layoffs, they reflect a shift in the previous economic model involving German industrial expansion in the region.
