Hungary faces drought-driven water scarcity and wildlife damage

Hungary is facing significant environmental challenges driven by drought and low water levels. In the Baja region, the Sugovica branch of the Danube has nearly dried up in several sections, threatening local habitats and tourism. Experts note that the water loss is caused by a combination of climate change, low Danube water yields, deepening riverbeds, and sediment accumulation. While dredging has been suggested, specialists argue that sediment removal alone is insufficient without comprehensive water management and bank protection.

Simultaneously, the agricultural sector is struggling with massive losses due to drought and wildlife damage. As crops diminish, wildlife consumption of remaining harvests has increased, leading to significant financial burdens for farmers. To address the inefficiencies of traditional, slow, and costly manual damage assessment methods, there is a growing discussion regarding the use of drone technology. Current legislation supports the application of new technologies to improve the speed and accuracy of expert assessments in determining compensation for wildlife damage.
