Hungary faces EU funding deadlines and Budapest budget crisis

Hungary faces critical fiscal deadlines and structural financial challenges. To access approximately 7 trillion forints from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the government must meet specific milestones by August 31. One key requirement involves improving the efficiency of public spending through expenditure reviews. The government plans to implement these reviews using international expertise to identify savings and ensure long-term debt sustainability.

Simultaneously, Budapest is experiencing a severe financial crisis. Despite record local business tax revenues, the capital is struggling with liquidity shortages and high debt levels. This instability is attributed to systemic pressures, including the significant increase in the solidarity contribution paid to the central government. The city is currently relying on continuous credit rolling to maintain operations, facing a situation described as nearing structural insolvency without new agreements or access to direct EU funds.
