Hungary faces heatwave with temperatures up to 40 °C

Hungarian meteorological services warned that a heat dome moving from Western Europe will bring extreme temperatures on Sunday, June 21. Forecasts predict daytime highs of 35‑40 °C across much of the country, with some areas reaching 41 °C, and a red‑level heat alert was issued for Budapest and 12 counties. The warning also notes a risk of thunderstorms with gusts of 60‑80 km/h. A slight cooling is expected on Monday, with temperatures falling to 18‑22 °C overnight and remaining above 35 °C during the day. The heatwave is expected to ease from Wednesday onward as cooler fronts move in, bringing scattered showers.

The heat alert follows a pattern of unusually high central European temperatures linked to the so‑called “heat dome” phenomenon, which meteorologists say can strain health services and increase fire risk.
