Hungary faces massive grain harvest decline due to drought

Extreme summer heat and prolonged drought have significantly impacted agricultural yields in Hungary. According to an analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) based on COCERAL data, Hungary's grain harvest outlook has decreased by 3.1 million tons, making it one of the hardest-hit countries in Europe, trailing only France.

The market value of this decline in Hungary is estimated at approximately 723 million euros. The drought particularly affected corn crops during critical development stages, hindering pollination and accelerating plant aging due to water shortages and high temperatures.

Domestic corn harvests are facing a severe crisis. Current data indicates that only about 1.3 to 1.4 million tons of corn have been harvested, which is less than half of the 2.8 million tons recorded during the previous low point in 2022. Experts suggest that traditional farming models may no longer be sustainable under current climate conditions, necessitating a shift toward drought-resistant crops and regenerative soil technologies.
