Hungary faces rising forest fire risks due to drought and negligence

Prolonged drought and extended fire seasons are increasing the risk of forest and vegetation fires in Hungary. Experts from Nébih warn that the majority of these incidents are caused by human negligence, such as discarded cigarettes, campfires, or poorly maintained machinery.

Dry conditions in the Carpathian Basin have led to significant accumulations of flammable biomass. In areas like Pilis, the Balaton Highlands, and the Alföld, the risk is particularly high in pine forests compared to deciduous ones. While firebreaks have traditionally been used to slow spread, current intense crown fires often render standard 2-3 meter wide strips insufficient. Long-term solutions include restructuring forest composition and improving landscape management.

Agriculture plays a dual role in fire management. While agricultural activities—such as machinery use, burning, and pasture management—can act as ignition sources, conscious land management can also serve as a barrier to fire spread. Experts recommend minimizing non-essential agricultural work during peak fire danger periods and ensuring farmers are equipped with adequate firefighting tools.
