Hungary faces severe agricultural losses in apple and wine harvests

Hungary's agricultural sector is facing significant challenges due to adverse weather conditions, including frost, drought, and heatwaves, impacting both apple and grape harvests.

According to the FruitVeB Magyar Zöldség-Gyümölcs Szakmaközi Szervezet, Hungary is expected to see its weakest apple harvest in fifty years. Estimates suggest a total yield of approximately 130,000 to 140,000 tons, consisting of 50,000 to 60,000 tons of eating apples and 70,000 to 80,000 tons of industrial apples. This sharp decline is attributed to spring frost damage and summer heat stress. Consequently, producer prices for industrial apples have dropped by 30-40% compared to the start of the previous season.

Similarly, the wine industry reports a difficult season. Winemakers have contended with a combination of spring frosts, drought, and phytoplasma diseases. While the overall grape yield is expected to be significantly lower, some experts suggest that the quality of the resulting wines may still be high in certain areas. Beyond weather, the industry is also facing decreased global consumption and economic pressures from a strengthening forint.
