Central Europe agriculture faces yield losses from heat and drought

Agricultural sectors in Central and Western Europe are facing significant challenges due to extreme summer heat and prolonged drought. According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), the heat accelerated plant aging, causing corn in some regions to reach maturity up to three weeks earlier than normal. This has led to reduced yields across several key crops: soy is expected to be 15% lower, silage corn 14%, sugar beet 11%, grain corn 8%, and potatoes 7% compared to the five-year average.

In Hungary, HungaroMet reports a severe precipitation deficit, with 90-day totals showing a shortage of 100–180 mm in some areas. This lack of moisture is complicating autumn sowing and soil preparation, particularly for rapeseed. In Slovakia, the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK) notes that while harvesting is underway—with soy at 59% and potatoes at 50%—the extreme dryness has resulted in below-average yields, specifically impacting corn and livestock fodder.

Weather forecasts for the region indicate a continuation of dry, sunny conditions, often referred to as 'Indian summer,' which may further exacerbate soil moisture depletion despite the pleasant temperatures.
