Hungary faces severe water crisis amid climate change

Hungary faces a significant water crisis driven by climate change, necessitating a fundamental shift in national water management. Despite common misconceptions regarding the country's water wealth, 94 percent of surface waters originate from abroad, and Hungary ranks among the worst in the European Union regarding the renewal of internal water resources.

Experts suggest that treated municipal wastewater, landfill leachate, and rainwater must be viewed as valuable resources rather than waste to be drained. Current challenges include river regulation and extreme weather patterns that accelerate land drying, alongside soil degradation that reduces the earth's ability to retain moisture.

To adapt, experts advocate for legislative changes and the implementation of new technologies to facilitate water retention. While countries like Singapore already utilize treated municipal wastewater for a significant portion of daily consumption, Hungary has yet to implement such widespread practices.
