Hungary faces surge in unpaid speeding fines
In the first half of 2026, the Hungarian National Police Headquarters issued 379,327 administrative fines for speeding under objective responsibility laws. Data reveals a significant issue with non-payment: as of September, over 102,000 of these fines—approximately 27%—remain unpaid. The total amount of outstanding speeding fines has exceeded 6.17 billion forints.
Despite previous increases in fine amounts, which currently range from 50,000 to 468,000 forints, the number of unpaid penalties continues to rise. In response to this ongoing trend, the Ministry of Transport has launched a road safety questionnaire that includes inquiries regarding the potential tightening of speeding penalty regulations.
