Hungary faces water management challenges amid drought and extreme weather

Climate change is driving extreme weather patterns in Hungary, characterized by prolonged droughts and high-intensity rainfall events. While heavy rain can cause immediate damage to settlements and agriculture, the water often drains too quickly to replenish soil or groundwater reserves. This has shifted the focus of water management from rapid drainage to water retention to support agriculture and mitigate flash floods.

In a specific instance of these conditions, Kolon Lake is expected to dry up completely by the end of the month. Although the receding water levels have created a temporary feeding ground for numerous bird species—including black storks, grey herons, and various sandpipers—the ecological impact is severe. To mitigate the loss, the Kiskunsági National Park Directorate has conducted fish rescues, successfully relocating approximately 500 specimens, including the protected Kolon-lake genetic population of the marsh grasshopper, to ensure their survival for the next wet period.
