Hungary Finance Minister dismisses NAV deputy head
Hungarian Finance Minister András Kármán has dismissed Mariann Szalavics from her position as deputy president for resource management at the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV). The decision was initiated by the new president of the tax authority, Mónika Sádt, who has emphasized the need to restore public trust and investigate previous abuses.
While the tax authority cited data protection and personality rights as reasons for not disclosing specific details, reports link the dismissal to ongoing corruption investigations involving Volánbusz. Szalavics served as the financial director of Volánbusz from 2013 until 2019, a period that overlaps with a criminal investigation into alleged illegal advantages totaling over 11 billion forints through company contracts.
Although Szalavics is not currently listed as a suspect in the Volánbusz criminal proceedings, witnesses in the case have raised questions regarding financial management during her tenure at the transport company.
