Hungary faces financial pressure as cash stocks approach 10 trillion forints

Recent data highlights a complex financial landscape in Hungary, characterized by low financial resilience among citizens and shifting banking habits. According to the NN Longevity study, only 25% of Hungarians have savings left at the end of the month, and just 17% can cover unexpected large expenses. While there are slight improvements in financial awareness and the ability to cover sudden costs, many indicators remain stagnant.

In terms of liquidity, the Hungarian National Bank (MNB) reports that the cash stock in circulation is approaching a psychological threshold of 10 trillion forints, reaching 9,794.6 billion forints in July. This amount represents over 11% of the country's GDP, a ratio higher than the Eurozone average of 9.5%.

Banking trends show varied consumer behavior. While some seek high-interest deposit offers from institutions like K&H, Gránit, and OTP, others are looking for cost-effective student accounts. Research suggests that for families, opening a child's account at a different bank than the parents' may no longer be a disadvantage due to the equalization of domestic and external transfer fees. Additionally, experts note that while 81% of the adult population has savings, over 75% of those with less than 8 million forints keep their funds in cash or current accounts rather than investing them.
