Hungary gold convoy investigation: five suspects identified
The Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that five individuals have been interrogated as suspects in the ‘gold convoy’ case. This investigation stems from a March 5 incident on the M3 motorway, where the Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK) and intelligence services intercepted a Ukrainian convoy, seizing several tons of gold and large sums of cash.
Among the identified suspects are János Hajdu, the former director of the Counter Terrorism Centre, and István Szathmáry, an employee of the Constitution Protection Office. Hajdu faces charges of unlawful detention involving the torture of victims; he has denied the allegations and remains at liberty.
The investigation, which the Prosecutor's Office took over on October 2, also follows reports of crisis meetings held within the Ministry of Interior following the April elections. These meetings reportedly addressed the legal implications and concerns surrounding the interception of the Ukrainian shipment. Former organizational leaders have alleged that the operation may have involved political pressure and direct instructions to intelligence services.
