Hungary drought heat alert wheat harvest quality corn loss forecast Black River water quality

The wheat harvest in Vas County is practically finished, with 96 % of the wheat area harvested, but grain quality is poor because of drought‑induced moisture stress. Yield averaged 6.7 t ha⁻¹, above the national 4 t ha⁻¹ average. Nationwide, 92 % of Hungary’s land is now under moderate or severe agricultural drought, and soil moisture in the central and eastern regions is below 20 % in the top half‑metre of soil. Water deficit measurements show shortages of 100–170 mm across large areas.

A third‑level heat alert has been in force for the whole country from 28 July to 4 August, warning of heightened health risks for outdoor workers and recommending frequent hydration, breaks and shade. The MBH Bank agritrend index fell to 31 points, its lowest in three years, and analysts forecast that corn will be the most heavily impacted crop this season.

Separate water‑quality tests on the Black River (Fekete‑Körös) confirmed that the river meets safety standards; the foul smell was traced to plant‑based waste that is now decomposing, and fishing and swimming bans have been lifted.
