Hungary heatwave drives health advice on hydration and heatstroke prevention

A prolonged heatwave across Hungary has pushed daily maximum temperatures above 40 °C, breaking national records. Dr. Nathasa Fernando, director of Medichecks, recommends milk as the most effective thirst‑quencher because its protein, fat and electrolyte content slows gastric emptying and keeps the body hydrated longer. He adds that quality milk should be boiled before consumption, especially for vulnerable groups.

Pediatric specialist Havasi Katalin warns that the extreme heat poses serious risks of heatstroke and sunburn, particularly for children and the elderly. She advises regular intake of water, mineral water, fresh fruit juices, coconut water, cucumber or watermelon juice, and stresses the importance of external cooling methods such as cool showers, wet towels, and light‑coloured hats. Moderate use of air‑conditioning is recommended, avoiding temperature differences greater than ten degrees to prevent respiratory irritation. Together, these experts urge the public to stay hydrated, maintain electrolyte balance, and take protective measures to reduce heat‑related health incidents.
