Hungary heatwave triggers nationwide warning and garden watering guidance

Hungarian Meteorological Service (HungaroMet) has issued a first‑level, lemon‑yellow heat warning for almost the entire country starting 23 June. Forecasts call for daytime highs of 25‑34 °C, clear to partly cloudy skies and limited showers through the week, with temperatures remaining elevated through 26 June.

Gardening experts advise that, to protect plants during the kánikula, watering should be done in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lowest. They recommend watering once or twice a day, testing soil moisture with a finger, and avoiding excessive irrigation that can cause leaf scorch or disease. Additional measures include using mulch to retain soil moisture and raising lawn height to 2.5‑4 cm. Over‑watering is warned against as it can be as harmful as drought.

The combined advice and official alert aim to help citizens manage both health risks from the heat and the wellbeing of gardens and lawns across Hungary.
