Hungary household electricity use for heating and cooling rises significantly
Analysis of data from the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) between 2015 and 2024 reveals a significant shift in household energy patterns in Hungary. Over the last decade, electricity used for cooling has increased more than fourfold, while electricity used for heating has increased more than fivefold.
Despite these rises in electrical demand, total household energy consumption decreased by 16%. However, experts from Energiaklub suggest this decline is largely attributed to the 2022 energy price hikes and milder winters rather than comprehensive energy efficiency programs.
Natural gas remains a dominant energy source, accounting for 46% of total household energy use and more than half of all heating in 2024. While the trend toward electrification is underway, experts note that a structural transition from fossil fuels to renewable-based electricity is still in its early stages.
