Hungary implements new protocols to prevent congenital syphilis

The National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK) has issued a new protocol to prevent the transmission of syphilis from mother to child. This measure follows reports of 100 babies born with syphilis in Hungary this year.

Starting September 1, the new guidelines mandate syphilis screening during the first trimester, with a follow-up test required between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy. For high-risk individuals or those not receiving regular prenatal care, rapid testing must be conducted at the time of childbirth.

In cases of a positive diagnosis, specific penicillin treatment must begin within 72 hours. The protocol also emphasizes the importance of partner care, requiring that sexual partners be identified and notified within 48 hours to prevent reinfection and further transmission.
