Hungary introduces debt moratorium for agricultural businesses
Agriculture Minister Szabolcs Bóna and Levente Kovács, Secretary General of the Hungarian Banking Association, have announced a voluntary principal repayment moratorium to support struggling agricultural enterprises. Starting September 1, eligible businesses can suspend principal repayments until December 31, 2027, though interest obligations remain in effect.
The program aims to address economic uncertainties caused by drought, a deteriorating macroeconomic environment, and trade wars. It is estimated that approximately 500 billion forints in loan portfolios may be affected. While the relief is primarily aimed at agricultural producers, it is intended to benefit the entire value chain, including processors, traders, and service providers.
Participation is voluntary for banks, which will decide individually whether to join the initiative and set their own criteria for determining which businesses are in need. The Ministry plans to coordinate with banks and the Hungarian National Bank to monitor the program's effectiveness. Applications for the moratorium can be submitted until December 31.
