Hungary issues second‑degree heat alert as temperatures soar
Hungary's National Public Health and Pharmacy Centre and the State Disaster Management Authority declared a second‑degree heat alert for the entire country from 20 June to midnight on 23 June. The alert warns that the early‑season heat wave can quickly cause dehydration, heat‑stroke and aggravate chronic conditions, especially among the elderly, young children and pets.
Health officials advised staying well‑hydrated, avoiding intense afternoon sun, wearing light clothing and using high‑SPF sunscreen. They urged people to check on vulnerable relatives and limit strenuous outdoor activity.
Transport safety experts highlighted that car interiors can reach 70 °C even in partial shade, increasing accident risk as driver concentration wanes. Practical tips included parking in shade, using external sunshades, rapid door‑flapping ventilation before driving, and moderate use of air‑conditioning to avoid large temperature differentials.
Overall, the combined guidance aims to reduce heat‑related illnesses and traffic incidents during the country's first major heat wave of the year.
