Hungary Issues Second‑Level Heat Alert as Temperatures Surge

A second‑level heat alert has been issued for Hungary from 20 June to 23 June 2026, covering the entire country. The alert follows a forecast of sustained high temperatures, with daytime highs expected between 31 °C and 37 °C and night‑time lows remaining above 20 °C. Authorities warn that the heat will especially strain the elderly, young children, and people with cardiovascular conditions.

Health officials advise the public to increase fluid intake, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours (approximately 11 a.m.–4 p.m.), wear light clothing and sunscreen, and seek shade or air‑conditioned environments. They also stress that children, pets and vulnerable persons should never be left in parked vehicles, as interior temperatures can quickly exceed 70 °C.

The national rail operator MÁV and bus company Volán will provide free bottled water at stations and stops during the alert period. Similar heat warnings have been issued in neighboring countries, and meteorological services expect the heatwave to persist across parts of Europe for several days, with some regions potentially reaching 45 °C.
