Hungary labels Russia a threat, prompting Russian energy warnings

The Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has signaled a major shift in foreign policy by formally labeling Russia a threat to Hungary, Europe, and the global order. This policy change was outlined in instructions for the Hungarian delegation to the upcoming UN General Assembly.

The new directive condemns Russian military aggression and expresses full support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to self-defense. This marks a significant departure from the previous administration under Viktor Orbán, which maintained close ties with the Kremlin and often obstructed European Union efforts to assist Ukraine.

In response, Russian lawmakers have issued warnings. Grigory Karasin accused the new government of joining a ‘battalion of hatred and hostility towards Russia,’ while State Duma member Andrei Kolesnik suggested that Russian energy deliveries, including oil, to Hungary could now be ‘in question.’

This diplomatic realignment follows recent political changes in Budapest and has already resulted in practical shifts, such as the unblocking of approximately 6.6 billion euros from the European Peace Facility that had been stalled under the previous government.
