Hungary launches 250 km road renovation program

Transport Minister Vitézy Dávid announced that Magyar Közút will undertake a 250‑kilometre road‑renovation programme using its own equipment and workforce. The initiative aims to shift spending from highway concession payments—totaling about HUF 1.024 trillion over the past four years to companies linked to Lőrinc Mészáros—towards the deteriorating regional primary and secondary road network.

Vitézy highlighted that nine out of every ten forints allocated to road development previously went to concessionaires. He noted a 7 % budget shortfall even after EU funds are returned, but stressed the necessity of immediate work on the national road system to address the poor condition of rural roads.

The programme marks the first step in a broader effort to re‑allocate resources from costly highway concessions to improve Hungary’s overall road infrastructure.
