Hungary launches 500 billion‑forint renewable energy funding program

The Hungarian government announced the opening of energy tenders worth more than 500 billion forints to expand renewable power generation. The programme aims to connect additional solar and wind capacity, increase total installed output by about 1.5 times by 2030 and keep the country among the world’s top per‑capita solar producers. Funding will be drawn from EU recovery resources and includes support for grid upgrades, smart‑meter rollout and energy‑storage projects.

Energy expert Balogh József cautioned that the ageing electricity network also requires multibillion‑forint investment. He warned that winter peak demand regularly exceeds 8,000 MW and that the surge of household photovoltaic systems stresses a grid not modernised since a 2013 price‑cut policy. He called for a long‑term, multi‑year programme to rebuild infrastructure, install smart meters and increase transmission capacity.
