Hungary launches Central Europe's largest battery storage in Buj

Hungary has completed its biggest battery‑based electricity storage facility in the village of Buj, Szabolcs‑Szatmár‑Bereg county. Two independent units, each supplying 49.9 MW of power and 144.3 MWh of capacity, were built by Forest‑Vill Zrt. under a contract from the Portuguese‑backed Greenvolt Power and use BYD lithium‑iron‑phosphate cells. The combined complex provides 99.8 MW of power and 288.5 MWh of storage, enough to power more than 40 000 households in a single discharge cycle, making it the largest such installation in Central Europe.

The projects were funded with roughly 5.68 billion forints of non‑repayable EU Recovery and Resilience Facility support for each unit and are scheduled for full operation by May 2026. The modular, container‑based design offers high thermal stability, advanced diagnostics and scalable operation, and Forest‑Vill will also handle long‑term maintenance of the auxiliary substations.
