Hungary launches mosquito control program in four counties

The National Disaster Management Directorate of Hungary announced the start of a coordinated mosquito‑control operation in Baranya, Fejér, Pest and Szabolcs‑Szatmár‑Bereg counties. The initiative, begun this week, combines standard adult mosquito spraying with biological larvicide treatments in selected areas of Pest and Szabolcs‑Szatmár‑Bereg.

A key focus is the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which has become increasingly common across Europe. Authorities stress that residents must eliminate standing water in containers such as buckets, flower pots and rain barrels to prevent larval breeding. The program will be monitored closely, with further actions dependent on weather conditions and mosquito population trends.
