Hungary launches probe into seizure of Ukrainian gold convoy

Hungary has opened an internal investigation of its tax authority, anti‑terrorism units and other agencies over the controversial "gold convoy" case. The previous Orbán government temporarily seized about $82 million in cash and gold that belonged to Ukraine’s Oschadbank, which was being moved by seven Ukrainian officials in two armored vehicles. The officials were briefly detained in March on suspicion of money‑laundering. New Prime Minister Peter Magyar said the chief state attorney must address the matter without delay. Hungary returned the cash and gold to Ukraine a few days before Magyar’s inauguration, despite Orbán’s previous scepticism toward aid for Kyiv and his veto of EU sanctions on Russia.
