Battle of Mohács 500th anniversary marked by ceremonies and controversy
The 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, a pivotal moment in Central European history, is being marked by various religious and state ceremonies. In Mohács, the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference will hold a solemn mass at an outdoor altar, featuring the placement of remains recovered from mass graves. Other commemorative activities include exhibitions, concerts, and historical lectures across the region.
In Devecser, a controversy has emerged regarding a wooden monument intended to honor soldiers from the 1526 battle. While officials described the work as a winged Turul bird, many observers criticized it for resembling a winged fallacy. The monument has since been dismantled.
In Romania, commemorations are also taking place, including a historical conference in Zalău and a memorial service at the Úz Valley military cemetery to honor those who fell during conflicts in the region.
