Hungary marks Saint Stephen Day and Mohács anniversary

Hungarian leaders held ceremonies to mark Saint Stephen Day and the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács. During the Saint Stephen Day celebrations at Kossuth Lajos Square, President András Baka, Prime Minister Péter Magyar, and Speaker of the National Assembly Ágnes Forsthoffer participated in the flag-raising ceremony.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar emphasized the necessity of a strong national defense to ensure peace, noting that modern threats extend beyond physical borders to include attacks on IT systems, energy supplies, and transportation networks. He stated that while Hungary is a member of NATO and the EU, the nation must possess its own reliable military strength and diplomatic capabilities.

Separately, President András Baka visited the Mohács National Memorial to commemorate the victims of the 1526 Battle of Mohács. He honored the fallen at the Christian memorial site and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The commemoration highlighted the battle as a defining moment in Hungarian history, serving as both a symbol of loss and a reminder of the nation's ability to rebuild.
